Since 1995, Elder Care Home Health has been providing quality elder care in the Toronto area. They have personal support workers (PSWs) and their supervising team is composed of registered nurses and registered practical nurses.

What we like most about this service is that they don’t charge extra for the care that the supervising nurse will provide. The assessment, implementation of a care plan, scheduled visits, and guidance of the supervising nurse to the PSW all come with the package.

Their types of care are pretty extensive. They are knowledgeable in looking after seniors who are diagnosed with dementia, Parkinson’s, and even congestive heart failure (CHF).

They are also well-equipped to take care of stroke and post-surgery patients. We also like how they offer feeding assistance, overnight services, and other complex care services.

On top of all these, their services are available in various locations. They can lend a hand whether your parent or grandparent is currently staying at home, in a retirement home, in a nursing home, or even in a hospital.

With all these, we find that there isn’t much to dislike about this service. We do note that they are closed during weekends, but a 24/7 hotline is available for emergencies.

Elder Care Home Health makes a good place to recommend for senior care given their experience and range of services. They are reliable and their prices won’t break the bank.

Pros

  • More than 25 years experience
  • Reasonable rates
  • 24/7 emergency hotline
  • Extensive list of services

Cons

  • Office is closed during weekends
  • Some PSWs are not qualified to administer First-Aid or CPRs (according to a review)

The first office of Senior Helpers was opened by founders Tony Bonacuse and Peter Ross in Baltimore in 2002. This was after they experienced caring for their own family members and realising that they could actually create an organisation.

Senior Helpers expanded and is now recognised as one of the most reliable places for elderly care in the Greater Toronto Area and arguably in the entire Canada. They currently have 6 branches across the country, which makes them easier to find depending on your location.

They also special care for Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients and Parkinson’s patients and are recognised to be one of the best in this field, Their services range from home health, companion care, and personal care and they also provide surgery assistance or sitter services.

On top of these, they also have a wellness watch service to monitor the overall well-being of a senior. They also promote a special package called the Senior Gems® service, which is their approach towards understanding the levels of aging and identifying stages of dementia.

We honestly don’t see anything alarming about Senior Helpers. We do note that all of their offices are closed during weekends.

It is also important to mention that this is a home-based care service, which means that they cannot necessarily provide assistance for seniors who are already in a nursing home or retirement place.

Overall, we recommend Senior Helpers especially for those who need a hand in caring for loved ones who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. Their expertise in this make them a safe and reliable service.

Pros

  • Has been in the business for 2 decades
  • Experts in dealing with Alzheimer’s and Dementia patients
  • Offers a wellness watch service

Cons

  • For home-based elderly care only
  • All offices are closed during weekends

Born out of passion in working with elders, Infinite Care began in 2009 and has been proudly serving the Greater Toronto Area since. They also serve nearby places such as Markham and Richmond Hill.

Probably the best thing about this service is that they have a 24/7 hotline available. They usually follow regular hours during weekdays but the 24-hour hotline makes them an optimal choice during weekends.

We like how they are very empathic and how this reflects in the care they provide. They have PSWs, home care workers, personal trainers, computer teachers, and personal chauffeurs for seniors needing assistance.

What we find convenient about their team is that they make the perfect choice for elders who are in need of someone to rely on for their day-to-day activities.

We find it really nice that they have computer teachers, as there are senior citizens out there who still aim to explore cyberspace.

The downside of their services is that they don’t have expertise on caring for diagnosed seniors. This is a disadvantage because there are other organisations who provide assistance for patients with dementia, Parkinson’s, and the like.

All said, we recommend Infinite Care for their friendly and passionate service. Their approach makes them a good choice for those who need someone that they can trust with their loved ones.

Pros

  • 24/7 hotline
  • More than 10 years’ experience
  • Friendly and compassionate approach
  • Provides computer teachers and personal trainers for seniors

Cons

  • Not experts for elderly patients
  • Does not cater to seniors in a retirement or nursing home

Home Instead is a non-medical home care and companionship service that was founded in 1994. Their focus is to extend personal care for elders and their families in the Toronto community.

Given their name, the services of this place are exclusively for those who need in-home care for elders. They are able to send caregivers for your loved ones or friends who are in need of assistance.

What we find most interesting about this service is their process. They are very thorough in terms of asking for what the senior may need, down to details such as television usage, answering the door, caring for houseplants, and more.

They have designated care coordinators at their local offices. This makes scheduling and communication between the senior citizen’s family and Home Instead easier.

We like the fact that they have a free, no-obligation consultation for their home care service. This is very convenient for discerning family members and is also a great way to introduce the business.

The only inconvenient thing about this service is that they don’t have special knowledge to care for diagnosed patients. Their focus is to provide someone who the senior can depend on.

Nonetheless, we find that Home Instead is a great companionship service for elders. You can rest assured that they will assist your loved one every step of the way.

Pros

  • Almost 30 years in the business
  • Very thorough process
  • Has designated care coordinators per local office
  • Free consultation

Cons

  • Non-medical care services
  • Strictly for in-home care

Customer Reviews

Very responsive and communicate clearly

“I have been extremely pleased with the service provided. They are very responsive and communicate clearly in a timely manner about any schedule changes. And of course most importantly, my mother has found the PSWs to be very helpful and pleasant. Engaging this company has given me great peace of mind as I live several hours away.”  — Debbie Casey, via Google

They try very hard to match caregivers to the clients needs and personalities

“I would highly recommend Home instead. They are very accommodating and caring. They try very hard to match caregivers to the clients needs and personalities. Their staff listen to the client and follow through on any suggestions.” — Karen Hen, via Google

Founded in 2005, Home Care Assistance is positioned to assist the elderly as they go through aging. Their services are comprehensive, concierge-based care at home.

The main idea of this service is to allow seniors to live within the comfort of their home and their comfort zones. Their services are pretty diverse and are reflective of their knowledge in the field.

Hourly home care is one of their top-tier services. We find this very convenient as not all people will need long-term assistance in terms of caring for their elder loved ones.

We also like the fact that even if they are an at-home-care service, they are well-versed in dealing with patients with alzheimer’s, dementia, parkinson’s, and even stroke. They even provide hospice support and post-hospital care.

They also have options for seniors who are living in retirement homes and facility cares. They are able to provide their assistance there, with options for a flexible schedule.

We do warn that Home Care Assistance has a few issues in terms of customer service. They can sometimes be unreachable or they take a little while to respond, which can be a dealbreaker for many.

On the other hand, their staff are really compassionate.

Home Care Assistance is a safe choice for those who need a passionate service. They have been assisting seniors for more than a decade and have been doing a good job so far.

Pros

  • 17 years experience
  • Extensive list of services
  • Can provide at-home or outside care
  • Care managers are available to speak with 24/7

Cons

  • Customer service is sometimes unreachable
  • Delayed responses in terms of concerns or bookings

Every question was met with patience, thoughtfulness and clarity

“It’s a stressful and overwhelming process to find the right kind of care for your family when that time comes. Home Care Assistance was not my first call but they were certainly my last. Every concern, every question was met with patience, thoughtfulness and clarity. I would recommend this company to anyone looking for help for their parents or loved ones. Thank you! Thank you!” — shane mcloughlin, via Google
