10 Best Chocolate Shops in Toronto Handpicked by True-Blue Chocoholics

best-chocolate-shops-toronto-banner

As a kid, I’ve always been jealous of Hansel and Gretel. Not the being abducted by a witch part, of course, but because they were able to eat a house made of candy, cake, sugar, and chocolate (at least in the modern adaptations).

My obsession grew after watching Charlie & the Chocolate Factory. The film didn’t scare me like it did my peers—I was just after the free-flowing chocolate river, chocolate plants and trees, basically, chocolate everywhere!

So, yeah, in a nutshell, I’m a real chocophile. Who better to give you a list of the best chocolate shops in Toronto, right? Trust me, I won’t steer you wrong.

Must-Order: Cosmo (The Baby Owl)

Founded in 2023 by a husband-and-wife team, SOMA Chocolatemaker was created to come up with new ways to make chocolate more delicious. It was named after a mystical concoction in the Rigveda (an ancient text), which grants immortality.

The shop itself is lovely—it has exposed brick, warm, natural light, handmade pottery lamps, and a huge reclaimed log bench. And it’s always buzzing—thanks in part to the free chocolate shot samples they sometimes hand out.

I just love gawking at their displays of house-made truffles, single-origin bars, and amazing, whimsical creations. No wonder they won several accolades from the International Chocolate Awards!

My favorite has to be Cosmo the baby owl (that’s as adorable as it is delicious). It blends white, dark, milk, mango, matcha, and salted caramel chocolates with crunchy, crispy bits—each one from ethically sourced cacao.

Pro Tip:

If you want to peek into their windowed chocolate lab and bakery to watch the magic happen, snag a seat at the back of SOMO. While you’re at it, we recommend trying their espresso made with 49th Parallel beans!

Must-Order: Brigadeiro Bites

Mary’s Brigadeiro is a Black woman-owned business born from Mary’s dream to spread joy through chocolate, specifically the ones from Brazil called brigadeiros. They’re soft, fudgy little bites made from condensed milk, butter, pure cocoa powder, and chocolate.

She adds her own twist to this Brazilian treat, with fun, multicultural flavors. And she carefully handcrafts each treat in small batches, which you can buy individually or in lovely gift boxes.

My favorite is her Chocolate Bunny, made for people who love biting the ears off first (you know who you are!). Inside, it’s filled with her signature creamy brigadeiro.

Another go-to of mine is their Brigadeiro Bites. These ‘poppable’ little sweets are dangerously addictive, with flavors like passion Fruit (hand-rolled in pink, fruity chocolate) and Cookies’n Cream.

Pro Tip:

We recommend following Mary’s Brigadeiro’s socials. They often drop fun collabs, seasonal specials, and limited-edition treats you won’t find in-store every day.

Must-Order: Vanilla Sea Salt

ChocoSol Traders works directly with cacao farmers in the Lacandon Jungle in Chiapas and the mountains of Oaxaca. Their bars are not only delicious, they’re also dairy-, nut-, and gluten-free, making them a go-to for eco-minded chocoholics.

We’re impressed that they built most of their chocolate-making machinery, including a volcanic stone grinder modeled after traditional Oaxacan molinos. They also slow roast their cacao beans (instead of using high heat) to preserve deep, complex flavors.

I love their Rustico Line, which includes crowd favorites like Luscious Coconut, Vanilla Sea Salt, and pure, dark chocolate, all ground for 8 hours to get just the right texture. Another addictive option is their Jaguar Crunch bar, made from rare albino cacao.

If you want to browse, you’ll find an entire wall lined with shelves of bean-to-bar chocolate and coffee products in eco-friendly packaging.

Pro Tip:

Visit ChocoSol Traders on a Friday for chocolate tastings, or better yet, book the space for a private tasting or a fun event with friends. They even host live music sometimes, so check their socials for upcoming experiences.

Soul Chocolate

Address: 20 Wagstaff Dr Unit C
Hours: Mon – Sun: 9 AM – 5 PM
Contact: (416) 672-0113
Must-Order: Chocolate Shot

Soul Chocolate is a small-batch chocolate shop that makes it right on site. You can watch it happen through a glass wall in the back of the shop, plus the window is decorated with cool graphics that show every step of the chocolate-making process.

They source their beans from Ecuador, Madagascar, the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Tanzania. What’s wild is that the chocolate starts off as a fermented product—once dried and shipped, the beans are processed in-house.

We love that every bar is vegan and made from just two ingredients: cacao and organic cane sugar. This means the chocolate actually tastes like the place it’s from, with fruity, nutty, or earthy notes.

In addition to chocolates, they also serve coffee and rich, chocolate drinks, plus tasting flights and pairings.

Pro Tip:

Don’t leave without trying Soul Chocolate’s chocolate shot. For only $3, you get an espresso-sized cup of pure molten Dominican chocolate spun to perfection—yum!

Must-Order: Dubai Bars

Stubbe Chocolates is a family-owned shop that’s been serving decadent, hand-crafted treats for generations. They’re known for seasonal creations like heart-shaped smashables for Valentine’s Day or themed boxes for Mother’s Day and Easter.

Their artisan chocolates are made from premium ingredients, highlighting the natural flavour of cocoa, from rich, dark bars to signature smooth milk chocolate. We love their Dubai Bars, made with pistachio praline and tahini in a chocolate shell.

Another crowd pleaser is their Wychwood Sandwich, made with Ontario-grown hazelnuts and locally milled rye flour. You’ll also find stunning bonbons, truffles, and chocolate cakes in Stubbe’s blue boxes, complete with a handy flavor guide.

And for corporate orders, they have beautifully curated gift sets. Plus, they’ll be happy to work with you to create a tailored offering.

Pro Tip:

Keep an eye out for Stubbe Chocolates’ limited-edition collections, like their “Taylor-Made Chocolate Collection” inspired by Taylor Swift’s 11 albums.

Must-Order: Sour Cherry Hojicha

Onyx Chocolates in East Chinatown is a must-visit for those who enjoy luscious, Asian-inspired chocolate bonbons and glazed truffles.

The bonbons are as eye-catching as they’re delicious—you can build your own box or let the Onyx team surprise you. Each one is packed with unique flavors like Passion Cayenne—a fruity ganache with a chili kick—or the summery Tangerine Jasmine.

We also love their experimental chocolate bars and crunchy dragees or malt balls in flavors like durian, Thai tea, and peppermint. There’s even a bar with Mi Goreng seasoning, a spicy Asian noodle dish.

Vegans are not left out either—they offer options like Sour Cherry Hojicha, which is a mix of sour fruit and roasted Japanese green tea.

Pro Tip:

Planning a wedding or company event? Onyx Chocolates does custom and corporate orders, and they’ll coordinate with you for personalized chocolate options.

Must-Order: Chocolate Squirrel

Since 2009, Nadege Patisserie has become a Toronto staple, starting from a single location in Queen West and now boasting multiple spots across the 6ix. It was founded by Nadege Nourian, a fourth-generation French pastry chef.

We love their dedicated chocolate-making room, which is climate-controlled to produce bonbons, truffles, and creative chocolate bars. You can expect unique and unexpected flavor pairings here, like pistachio and passion fruit.

For something playful, go for their Flower Chocolate Lollipops, available in both milk and dark. Another popular option is the Flower Cookie, a buttery almond biscuit dipped in silky milk chocolate.

My absolute fave is their Chocolate Squirrel—a cute creation available in white, milk, or dark chocolate. Each one is filled with chocolatey surprises.

Pro Tip:

Nadege Patisserie also offers seasonal and limited-edition chocolate creations, especially around holidays. So, if you see something new, don’t wait—these sell fast!

Must-Order: Box of 15 Brigadeiros

Chocollata is another spot to go to if you’re craving a sweet taste of Brazil’s gourmet brigadeiros. What started as a family’s Sunday night Netflix snack turned into a thriving small business, now with two Ontario locations.

Their version is made with premium Belgian and French chocolate, hand-rolled in a variety of toppings like roasted nuts, sprinkles, and milk pearls.

For special occasions (or maybe just on a random Tuesday), I recommend their Box of 15 Brigadeiros—it’s beautifully packaged and filled with an assortment of flavors. Another winner is their Triple Chocolate Brownie Easter Egg—a rich, fudgy treat.

As a bonus, Chocollata’s tea is passionate about supporting the Down Syndrome community. Their mission is to hire individuals with Down Syndrome and give back to related organizations, which (for me) is sweeter than chocolates.

Pro Tip:

If you’re new to Chocollata, I recommend their mixed box of four. They’re so rich and super addictive, so while munching, don’t be surprised if you’re already planning your next visit!

Chocolat de Kat

Address: 824 St Clair Ave W
Hours: Mon – Sun: 12 PM – 6 PM

Must-Order: Build-Your-Own Bonbon Box

Chocolat de Kat is a female-founded chocolate shop that’s doing wonderful things to the classic bonbon. She started by making chocolates for friends and family; now, her company has grown into a team of 15 chocolate-lovers.

Here, you can build your own box of handmade bonbons—you can choose from 4, 9, and 25 pieces. Each one features a beautifully shiny shell (because they hand-polish every mold!) in white, milk, or dark chocolate.

As for flavors, we love their extensive lineup, with crowd faves like Hot Cross Bon, Black Forest gateau, PB & J Citrus Olive Oil Torte, Key lime Pie, and Passion Black Sesame.

Of course, each one is filled with delicious fillings like ganache, caramel, praline, or gelée. These definitely aren’t your standard truffles—they’re edible works of art!

Pro Tip:

Guess what, vegans! Chocolat de Kat offers a selection of vegan bonbons like Raspberry Dark, Limoncello Olive Oil, and Guava Ginger—flavors rotate seasonally, so check their website’s flavor page for in-stock items.

Avoca

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/avocachocolates/
Address: 176 Hampton Ave
Hours: Mon – Sun: 11 AM – 8 PM
Contact: (647) 352-4666
Must-Order: Specialty Truffle Box

Avoca is a family-run chocolate shop that began with the owner’s mother hand-rolling truffles over thirty years ago. The name is a Gaelic word for “Sweet Valley,” which we think perfectly reflects their sweet business.

Drawing from East Indian roots, the family offers globally inspired tastes, packed into the classic bonbon. Their chocolates are made using Fair Trade, kosher, and organic Belgian Callebaut, widely considered as one of the finest in the world.

After tempering the chocolate for a glossy finish, it’s shaped into truffles or paired with fresh cream, fruit, nuts, or liqueurs.

For those with dietary needs, they offer vegan treats like Tom & Jerry (solid dark chocolate) and “Mr. Tumnus” (dark chocolate cups filled with smooth organic peanut butter—yum!).

Pro Tip:

Not sure which bonbon to go for? We recommend snagging one of Avoca’s classic specialty truffle boxes, available in various sizes.
