Choosing a school or tutor for your voice lessons is also a personal investment. We used the following criteria to provide you with the best options:

Experience –  We only looked at schools or tutors with at least 10 years experience to make sure they have enough knowledge and expertise in the field.
Techniques –  Lessons can sometimes be monotonous. We selected those who make learning and singing enjoyable and purposeful at the same time.
Credibility –  We read reviews and looked at the testimonies of other people. Being a trusted and established school or tutor always matters.
Affordability –  While voice lessons can really be expensive, we chose those with packages that prove to be worth it in the long run.

Singer’s Edge is one of the most established music schools in Toronto, offering voice, piano, and guitar lessons since 2002. They garnered the Consumers’ Choice Award for Toronto and GTA and were recognized as one of the Top 3 music schools in Toronto from 2016-2019.

This school has two locations, one in downtown and one in midtown. This can be an advantage as it makes them more accessible and allows them to gather more students.

The best thing about Singer’s Edge is that it really encourages students to discover their style and even develop performance skills. They have performances that are open to anyone who feels confident to get up on stage.

Sessions-wise, we like how they offer lessons according to one’s desired level. They are also one of the most beginner-friendly schools.

Enrollees can choose from beginner, advanced, or youth singing lessons. Private makeup classes are available, along with group masterclasses for current students.

Online classes are also offered. They are open every day, but we note that their business hours do change so it would be best to check or call first.

Overall, Singer’s Edge makes a prime choice for voice lessons. They have some of the most flexible packages and do not compromise on the quality of their offers.

Pros

  • Award-winning
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Online classes

Cons

Offering private voice lessons for more than 10 years now, Voice Yourself Singing has become one of the most recommended for music instruction. This service was established by Val Bastien, who is also the one who conducts sessions and helps singers and students.

Voice Yourself Singing may not be a big school and may be a one woman team, but it has an impressive record. Training sessions heavily focus on understanding one’s sound and how this can be improved through breathing techniques, song choices, and even song writing.

The lessons promise a lot of learning, including, but not limited to, correcting posture, resonance, staying in rhythm, releasing tension, and vibrato.

We can say that the lessons have been effective so far given the perfect 5-star rating out of 45 Google reviews and number of positive online testimonies.

What we can see Voice Yourself Singing improving on is its operating hours. They seem to be a lot shorter than most, and everything is strictly by appointment.

On the bright side, Val offers a free initial consultation. This is honestly helpful for discerning students and it also makes a good marketing strategy.

Voice Yourself Singing offers lessons for both in-person and online. One can choose whether they need a singing teacher, vocal coach, or voice lessons.

Pros

  • Private voice lessons
  • Online sessions
  • More than 10 years experience
  • Free consultation

Cons

  • Short operating hours, closed during weekends
  • Strictly by appointment

 Easy going yet knowledgeable teacher

I took 12 singing lessons with Valerie. When I started I was embarrassed by my singing voice, but by the end I grew a lot more confident and I now enjoy singing around the house and while I play my guitar. I highly recommend taking lessons with Valerie if you want an easy going, yet knowledgeable teacher who will help you learn how to sing! — Steve Toth, via Google

Incredible at teaching me how to control my voice

Valerie is an amazing vocal instructor! This was my first time doing any formal vocal training, and Val was incredible at teaching me how to control my voice. She offers exercises and tricks that can help you overcome challenges, and makes recommendations based on your voice and experience. I could not recommend Val enough for anyone that is looking to explore singing further! — Julia Laing, via Google

Since 2008, Vocal Studio has been helping singers build their voices through classes. They have 2 locations, one in Toronto, Canada, and one in San Diego, USA.

The vocal coach for their Toronto branch is Will Patterson. He has 10 years experience in the field and has been successful in helping students connect with their voices.

Vocal Studio made it to our list because of their proven expertise. Their system follows mainly three steps, which are explore, improve, and record.

Examples of the core areas they focus on are pitch, range, dynamic, tone, and performance. They highlight that improving one’s voice leads to a more developed creativity in connecting to and communicating with people.

The downside of this service is that it only has a classroom-setting. It does not mention one-on-one sessions, which can be a disadvantage.

Scheduling is quite simple as students usually come in during the afternoon or early evening. Once a student has a schedule, they make sure to follow that throughout the course, be it online or in-person.

We do note that Vocal Coach is closed during Wednesdays and Sundays. In our opinion, closing during a weekday can be quite the dealbreaker.

All said, there isn’t really much to dislike about Vocal Coach. Its goal to empower singers in connecting more with their voices and enhancing their creativity gives them a thumbs up.

Pros

  • More than 10 years experience
  • Offers classes via Skype
  • Good for those who aim to record their singing

Cons

  • Closed during Wednesdays and Sundays
  • No private sessions

Great understanding of the human voice

Will Patterson is a fantastic teacher and voice coach. He has a great understanding of the human voice and is able to easily convey his ideas and instructions.  Learning to sing is very abstract and you really have to rely on feeling and sensation. Will is able to get me to sing/speak in the proper place.

Eli is incredibly passionate about singing. He is funny, charismatic, and easy to work with. This truly is the very best place to take voice lessons. — John Force, via Google

Combines vocal coaching with professional recording techniques

It’s a dope facility at a dope location. Will Patterson has a surprisingly intimate understanding of the mechanics of the voice. Their training style is unlike any other vocal coach I’ve ever been to. It combines vocal coaching with professional recording techniques. It’s an invaluable experience for any   artist starting out or working on their craft. — Aaron Williams, via Google

Having “hitting the high notes since 2003” as their main tagline, it is pretty clear what Ryan Luchuck Voice and Artist Development can offer. They have ample experience in coaching students and artists on how they can improve their voice.

Ryan Luchuck is a recognized international teacher trainer. What makes him more impressive is that he has mentored other voice coaches and is endorsed by voice experts worldwide.

Ryan also works with several organizations such as SingPro and The Pan-American Vocology Association.

Booking a session with Ryan Luchuck Voice and Artist Development is quite easy. You can either call or sign up online for your first lesson, which is promised at a 50% less price.

It is also guaranteed that “if you don’t learn more in your first lesson (than any previous training), you don’t pay.” Students also have the option to book a session with Ryan in his home studio or via Skype.

The only inconvenient thing we see about Ryan Luchuck Voice and Artist Development is that schedules are inconsistent and often confusing. While students do book their sessions and slots, it is still better if there will be set times for classes.

As of writing, Ryan is teaching over 200 students. His mastery of vocals and power to motivate students to perform makes him one of the safest choices out there.

Pros

  • Teaching students since 2003
  • Internationally recognized voice instructor
  • First lesson is 50% off

Cons

  • Inconsistent schedules
  • Unresponsive to emails (according to a review)

Has a strong music background that allows him to be able to pinpoint areas that need work and will give you tailor-made exercises to build your vocal range

I’ve been taking lessons from Ryan for just over a year now and I’m loving them! I look forward to the lessons every week! Ryan is patient and makes you feel so comfortable during the lessons. He has a strong music background that allows him to be able to pinpoint areas that need work and will give you tailor-made exercises to build your vocal range. I used to be so self-conscious about my voice and vocal range (or lack thereof, so I thought). Within the first few lessons, Ryan was already coaching me from where I was stuck in my chest voice to my head voice. I hope to continue taking lessons from Ryan and build on my vocal skills. If you’re looking for an amazing vocal teacher, look no further! — Laura Cohen, via Google

Best vocal coach and studio out there by far!

My daughter has been with Ryan since October and absolutely loves learning from him. We wish we would have found him years ago as her voice has improved immensely in this short time. He offers many opportunities outside of the studio for her to improve her voice and get comfortable on stage in front of an audience. He loves what he does and it really shows in how much of his free time he is willing to put in to help his students grow. Best vocal coach and studio out there by far! — Mark Adams, via Google

Celebrating 25 years in the music industry, the Canada Music Academy is definitely one of the best choices for anything about music. They offer lessons for various instruments and a diverse set of voice lessons.

Given their expertise, the range that this academy offers in terms of vocals is really commendable. Students can choose from classical, jazz & blues, pop & rock, theater, gospel, percussion, or even beatboxing lessons.

They also have a team of certified teachers to assist students in harnessing their potential. Lessons are conducted through online live, in-home or private, or at the teacher’s studio.

Probably the best thing about this music school is that those who opt for an online live lesson get their first session for free. That makes a really good option for those who are still discerning or are just curious about what music sessions like this entail.

Of course, this school has its setbacks. The influx of students often affects bookings and schedules, as well as the availability of teachers.

The teachers also have various starting rates and you are free to choose whomever you please, as long as they are available for your chosen schedule. We also like how their prices are really affordable.

In conclusion, Canada Music Academy is perfect for those who are just getting started. They can teach the principles of whatever it is you want to learn without asking too much from your pocket.

Pros

  • 25 years experience in the music industry
  • Voice lessons are genre specific
  • Can do online, private, or studio sessions
  • Affordable packages

Cons

  • Many students
  • Slots are often full

What I could sing sounds better

I get singing lessons from Daniela. She’s great. Knowledgeable, supportive, encouraging. And, best of all, in just a few months my voice is changing and I can sing things I couldn’t in the past, and what I could sing sounds better. Work in progress, but thoroughly recommended. — John Macleod
