I was today years old when I learned the clear difference between a periodontist and a dentist. Apparently, a dentist is like the general practitioner of your mouth, while a periodontist deals with the gums and the bone that supports your teeth.
A friend told me this after he went to a subpar periodontist who didn’t help him at all. In fact, he had to spend a lot to fix his issue. Yikes!
That’s why I decided to look for the best periodontists in the city. Hopefully, this guide will help you avoid the same trouble and find the perfect expert for your oral health.
How much does it cost to see a periodontist in Toronto?
In Toronto, a periodontist consultation visit typically ranges from $150 to $250. For more advanced treatments like deep cleaning (scaling and root planing), you might pay between $200 to $500 per quadrant.
Surgical procedures, such as gum grafting or dental implants, can range from $1,000 to $3,000 or more.
How We Chose the Best Periodontists in Toronto
1. Yonge Eglinton Periodontics
Yonge Eglinton Periodontics, located in central Toronto, has a team of three periodontists, led by Dr. Andrew Kay. They cater to clients from Eglinton, Yonge-University, North Toronto, North York, Leaside, and surrounding areas.
They specialize in fixing gum issues, like gummy smiles and those times when you need more tooth showing for crowns or fillings. They’re also experts in dental implants, which is when they put a little titanium post in your jawbone to hold your new teeth.
Besides that, they can help with dentures, deep cleaning, gum disease treatment, and other stuff to keep your gums healthy. They also use fancy cleaning stuff called MicroSure, which is supposed to be quite good.
While a bit on the pricey side, we think their top-notch services and expert care make it well worth it.
Pros
- Team of three periodontists
- Specializes in restoring gummy smiles
- Also specializes in dental implants
- Dentures, deep cleaning, and gum disease treatment
- Uses MicroSure products
Cons
- A bit pricey
Dr. Kay is an outstanding periodontist!
“Dr. Kay is an outstanding periodontist! There’s a reason Dr. Kay is booked year round. There’s a reason people from other cities come to see him. A week ago Dr. Kay performed implant surgery on me (three of them, top front) and I was expecting to go through aftermath pain for at least a day. The procedure went exceptionally well and that’s because it was executed seamlessly. Once the anesthesia wore out after just an hour it was injected, pain lasted maybe for three hours, there was no swelling and I didn’t even have to take painkillers. Just the medication he prescribed for after surgery. His pricing is really fair, his assistants are nice and professional and you’re greeted as soon as you enter the office. Lovelyn at the front desk is very professional and nice. Dr. Kay has the magic touch and despite the long wait time for seeing him, it’s definitely worth it all the way. I’m very satisfied and strongly recommend Dr. Kay.”

2. North York Periodontal Centre
North York Periodontal Centre has over 25 years of experience and is led by Dr. Hassanpour, who has awards and published research under his belt. He’s also a board-certified periodontist and a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
His clinic specializes in bite therapy, which fixes your bite without causing damage. Pocket reduction surgery is another specialty—it cleans out bacteria and tartar before stitching your gums back up.
They also offer dental implants that feel and work like real teeth. Other services include gum grafting, orthodontic tooth exposure, crown lengthening, and oral pathology.
We like that they’re super helpful with insurance paperwork, and they can also explain parts that you might find confusing.
Note, however, that some folks have found booking appointments a bit of a hassle because their appointment system is not very user-friendly.
Pros
- Over 25 years of experience
- Specializes in bite therapy
- Offers pocket reduction surgery
- Offers dental implants
- Helps with insurance paperwork
Cons
- Hard to book appointments

3. Cumberland Periodontics & Implant Surgery
With two offices in the city, Cumberland Periodontics has been around since 1966. It’s led by Dr. Michael Goldberg, who is included in The Village Post’s list of Toronto’s Top Dentists of 2024!
His clinic specializes in deep cleaning your teeth (scaling and root planing) to get rid of all those nasty bacteria. They also do more involved stuff like gum surgery and bone grafts.
Additionally, they offer dental implants and can even lengthen your crown for those with gummy smiles. Periodontal grafts and flaps are available as well.
We think it’s reassuring that they’re available 24/7 for emergencies that stem from their procedures.
But here’s the thing—we did hear that their front desk folks could use a lesson in politeness since they can be a bit rude and short-tempered.
Pros
- Over 60 years of experience
- Toronto’s Top Dentists of 2024
- Specializes in scaling and root planing
- Offers crown lengthening and implants
- 24/7 for procedure-related emergencies
Cons
- Reports of rude front staff
Extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and kind
“Dr. Goldberg is extremely knowledgeable, helpful and kind. He spent a great amount of time putting together a solution for my condition that other doctors were just giving me the run-around on. Kathy was friendly, responsible and very helpful. Dr. Goldberg’s assistant was also wonderful to interact with – a total dream team! The clinic is extremely well-organized and clean, going above and beyond on Covid protocols. I would highly recommend this practice!”

4. Johnstone Periodontics
Johnstone Periodontics is a go-to spot with a team of three skilled periodontists. It’s helmed by Dr. Andrea Johnstone, who has a special interest in soft tissue grafting for teeth and implants and regenerative surgery.
They’re big on preventing bone loss after you lose a tooth, and they’re also experts at deep cleaning your gums. Plus, if you need implants, they offer a nifty solution called Pro Arch that promises to be strong and let you eat whatever you crave.
We think it’s cool that they offer different ways to chill you out during procedures, from nitrous oxide to conscious IV sedation and general anesthesia.
As a bonus, booking appointments online is super easy.
On the other hand, some people say the periodontists themselves can be a bit rude. That’s a bummer because good dental care should come with a friendly smile.
Pros
- Has a team of 3 periodontists
- Specializes in ridge preservation
- Also offers osseous surgery
- Offers Pro Arch dental implants
- Wide range of sedation options
- Easy online booking
Cons
- Some periodontists were said to be rude

We like that they make their own teeth replacements right there in their in-house lab—talk about convenience!
They offer a full range of gum treatments, from the basic deep clean to more complex gum grafts and bone regeneration.
For busy patients, they provide expedited services and even overnight accommodations for more complex procedures. They also offer esthetic and reconstructive periodontics for those looking to address cosmetic or restoration needs.

On the other hand, we learned that the office managers there might not be the friendliest.
