We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Sure, listening to punk rock and pop is fun. But, after a long hard day at work, there’s nothing more relaxing than nursing a whiskey while listening to a smooth blues band in a dimly lit bar.

That’s exactly what I did with a friend last weekend, and it was everything I needed. That’s because Toronto’s blues bars have a charm that’s hard to beat, with live bands bringing all the grit, groove, and passion you could ask for.

So if you’re in the mood to get lost in some timeless tunes, here are the top spots to check out for an unforgettable night of blues music in the city.

How much does going to a blues bar cost in Toronto?

Generally, blues bar cover charges in Toronto range from $5 to $20, especially for live performances or well-known bands. Drinks are priced between $7 to $15 for a cocktail, beer, or glass of wine, while premium options may be higher.
Some bars also offer deals on certain nights, so you can enjoy live music without spending too much.
For a full night out, budget around $30 to $60, though this can vary with your food and drink choices.

How We Chose the Best Blues Bars in Toronto

Authentic Atmosphere: We looked for venues with a cozy, dimly lit ambiance and decor that adds to the blues vibe, creating the perfect setting for live music.
Quality of Live Music: We prioritized bars that consistently feature skilled, soulful blues musicians, ensuring a high standard of performance every night.
Acoustic Excellence: We examined the sound quality in each bar, favoring places with acoustics that bring out the depth and emotion of blues music.
Variety of Acts: We considered bars that offer a mix of blues legends, up-and-coming artists, and local talent, giving patrons a fresh experience with every visit.
Drink Selection: We noted bars with an impressive drink menu, including classic cocktails, whiskey, and bourbon options that complement the music.
Pricing and Value: We evaluated whether each bar offers a good balance of cover charges, drink prices, and overall experience, so you get the most bang for your buck.
Service Quality: We looked for bars with friendly, attentive staff who add to the welcoming and comfortable vibe of the venue.
Special Events and Theme Nights: We highlighted venues that offer unique blues nights, jam sessions, or special events, making every visit feel special and memorable.

Drink-wise, they have a solid selection at reasonable prices, with house beers that are always a good pick.

Grossman’s Tavern was established in 1943. Known for its no-frills, classic blues-bar feel, it’s where you can kick back, sip on some chilled beers, and just enjoy the tunes.

Every night here is a live music night. In fact, it has played host to some big names before they made it big—e.g. Amanda Marshall, Blue Rodeo, and Alannah Myles.

The lineup these days still leans into blues but also dips into folk, roots, jazz, and rock. They have an online event calendar you can check out—you’ll likely spot names like The Charter Blues Band, Greene and Blues Band, and Action Sound Band.

We love that they serve classic bar eats until 1:30 AM. The patio is a nice touch too—great for sipping beer in the open air, day or night.

One heads-up: the service can be a little on the slow side, especially when it gets busy.

Pros

  • Over 75 years of experience
  • Live music every night
  • Hosted big names
  • Updated online calendar
  • Serves bar eats until 1:30 AM
  • Has a patio

Cons

Awesome blues music without paying a cover charge

“This is an old bar, but it is an awesome place to experience a wide variety of music. If you want an environment that’s relaxed this is a great place to go. A wide range of ages attend this bar, very casual. I’ve been going for years and have seen some awesome blues music without paying a cover charge. That alone is a bonus.”

The Reservoir Lounge has been open since 1997, and it’s known for being a launchpad for young talent. In fact, Michael Bublé himself got started here!

The music vibe is all about energy, with anything from blues and jazz to Motown sets. Crowd favorites like DeeDee & The Dirty Martinis add a soulful Motown feel, while blues legends like Danny B and Alison Young keep it classic.

Dinner and drinks are half the fun, and reservations are the way to go if you want to snag a table.

Booking on the weekend? You’ll want to reserve at least 5-6 days in advance since tables fill up fast. But if you’re just there for drinks and music, aim to arrive about 30 minutes early to grab a spot, as the bar does get busy.

Note that the reservation system can be a bit glitchy, so double-check your booking!

BUSINESS HOURSWed - Sat: 6:30 PM–2 AM

Poetry Jazz Cafe, nestled in Toronto’s Kensington Market, brings together jazz, blues, and spoken word. Open since 2010, this spot has become a hub for the next generation of talented musicians and poets.

With a cover charge from $10 to $20, you’re treated to high-quality performances. More than 700 groups have performed here, including local favorites like Shafton Thomas Group, Quincy Bullen, and QNA.BAND.

Though it’s a tight space inside and tends to get packed shoulder to shoulder, we think that adds to the electric energy in the room.

Happy Hour from 6 to 9 PM is perfect for warming up with a drink before the main acts. They’ve got a killer Poetry Lychee Martini, which pairs well with their daily antipasto.

Just a heads-up: it’s cash-only at the door, so bring some cash for entry, but you can use cards inside for drinks and food.

Pros

  • Over 14 years of experience
  • Has hosted over 700 groups

  • Has a Happy Hour

Cons

  • Cash-only at the door

Poetry is my favorite place in Toronto

“Poetry is my favorite place in Toronto; i have been coming here for years and I always recommend it to anyone coming downtown. There’s a different live band every night, amazingly inspired cocktails, a cool ambiance and the people I meet there are awesome. Paul (the bouncer) makes me and my friends feel very welcome. The owner, Sean is always walking around making sure we’re having a great time. One of the best things that happened after this pandemic was honestly finding out that Poetry survived, and the new back patio is just great.”
