Sure, listening to punk rock and pop is fun. But, after a long hard day at work, there’s nothing more relaxing than nursing a whiskey while listening to a smooth blues band in a dimly lit bar.
That’s exactly what I did with a friend last weekend, and it was everything I needed. That’s because Toronto’s blues bars have a charm that’s hard to beat, with live bands bringing all the grit, groove, and passion you could ask for.
So if you’re in the mood to get lost in some timeless tunes, here are the top spots to check out for an unforgettable night of blues music in the city.
How much does going to a blues bar cost in Toronto?
Generally, blues bar cover charges in Toronto range from $5 to $20, especially for live performances or well-known bands. Drinks are priced between $7 to $15 for a cocktail, beer, or glass of wine, while premium options may be higher.
Some bars also offer deals on certain nights, so you can enjoy live music without spending too much.
For a full night out, budget around $30 to $60, though this can vary with your food and drink choices.
How We Chose the Best Blues Bars in Toronto
1. The Cameron House
The Cameron House is an iconic spot on Queen West. It has served as a home base for local bands and artists, including some incredible blues acts, since 1981.
Live music is a big deal here, with nightly performances spread across two stages. Check out the upcoming lineup online to catch bands like Fraser Melvin Blues Band and Libation Street Band.
The bar itself is full of character, with walls covered in amazing, one-of-a-kind murals.
Drink-wise, they have a solid selection at reasonable prices, with house beers that are always a good pick.
The one downside is the size; it can feel a bit cramped—keep that in mind if you’re not a fan of close quarters. Also, it’s a cash-only bar, but no worries, there’s an ATM inside.
One of the key reasons Toronto is the music capital of Canada
“If you know you know. One of the key reasons Toronto is the music capital of Canada.”

Best place for live music in the city
“The best place for live music in the city for the folks that don’t want the frills. Country, blues, comedy, jazz, you name it- it’s probably there. Beautiful owners with beautiful hearts who truly support artists 🫶 My mom has been going here for over 15 years, and I’m stoked I get to carry on the tradition 🎶”

2. The Rex Hotel Jazz & Blues Bar
The Rex is hands down one of the best spots in Toronto for blues and jazz lovers. With over 40 years under its belt, this legendary, family-run club has built a reputation for bringing top-notch talent.
The first show kicks off at 5:30 PM—note that it’s first-come, first-served. Later, the final set starts at 8:30 PM; these evening shows are popular, so buy tickets in advance.
From the Carl Bray Quintet to the Virginia Macdonald group, and the Angela Pincente Jazz Orchestra, you’ll find a little something for every taste. You can even download their online music calendar to keep up with who’s playing next.
However, it’s not all sunshine. While the blues music is top-tier, some guests have found the staff a bit on the rude side.
An unforgettable journey into the soul of music
“A night at Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar is an unforgettable journey into the soul of music. From the smooth melodies to the cozy ambiance, every moment is pure magic. The talented musicians and friendly staff create an atmosphere that keeps you coming back for more. Don’t miss out on this hidden gem!”

3. Grossman’s Tavern
Grossman’s Tavern was established in 1943. Known for its no-frills, classic blues-bar feel, it’s where you can kick back, sip on some chilled beers, and just enjoy the tunes.
Every night here is a live music night. In fact, it has played host to some big names before they made it big—e.g. Amanda Marshall, Blue Rodeo, and Alannah Myles.
The lineup these days still leans into blues but also dips into folk, roots, jazz, and rock. They have an online event calendar you can check out—you’ll likely spot names like The Charter Blues Band, Greene and Blues Band, and Action Sound Band.
We love that they serve classic bar eats until 1:30 AM. The patio is a nice touch too—great for sipping beer in the open air, day or night.
One heads-up: the service can be a little on the slow side, especially when it gets busy.
One of the best places to hear the blues
“Great place, one of the best places to hear the blues, a lot of great musicians and great customers, great staff, but if Tony Louie serves you, walk away and get table service!”

Awesome blues music without paying a cover charge
“This is an old bar, but it is an awesome place to experience a wide variety of music. If you want an environment that’s relaxed this is a great place to go. A wide range of ages attend this bar, very casual. I’ve been going for years and have seen some awesome blues music without paying a cover charge. That alone is a bonus.”

4. The Reservoir Lounge
The Reservoir Lounge has been open since 1997, and it’s known for being a launchpad for young talent. In fact, Michael Bublé himself got started here!
The music vibe is all about energy, with anything from blues and jazz to Motown sets. Crowd favorites like DeeDee & The Dirty Martinis add a soulful Motown feel, while blues legends like Danny B and Alison Young keep it classic.
Dinner and drinks are half the fun, and reservations are the way to go if you want to snag a table.
Booking on the weekend? You’ll want to reserve at least 5-6 days in advance since tables fill up fast. But if you’re just there for drinks and music, aim to arrive about 30 minutes early to grab a spot, as the bar does get busy.
Note that the reservation system can be a bit glitchy, so double-check your booking!
One of the best spots in the city to enjoy live music
“We been going to The Reservoir Lounge for years. The staff is super amazing. Musicians are so talented and amazing we love them all. The manager Ray is always very professional and friendly. This is one of the best spots in the city to enjoy live music and amazing service, food and atmosphere. That’s why we recently choose this venue for our wedding. I highly recommend this place for your outing.”

5. Poetry Jazz Cafe
Poetry Jazz Cafe, nestled in Toronto’s Kensington Market, brings together jazz, blues, and spoken word. Open since 2010, this spot has become a hub for the next generation of talented musicians and poets.
With a cover charge from $10 to $20, you’re treated to high-quality performances. More than 700 groups have performed here, including local favorites like Shafton Thomas Group, Quincy Bullen, and QNA.BAND.
Though it’s a tight space inside and tends to get packed shoulder to shoulder, we think that adds to the electric energy in the room.
Happy Hour from 6 to 9 PM is perfect for warming up with a drink before the main acts. They’ve got a killer Poetry Lychee Martini, which pairs well with their daily antipasto.
Just a heads-up: it’s cash-only at the door, so bring some cash for entry, but you can use cards inside for drinks and food.
Poetry is my favorite place in Toronto
“Poetry is my favorite place in Toronto; i have been coming here for years and I always recommend it to anyone coming downtown. There’s a different live band every night, amazingly inspired cocktails, a cool ambiance and the people I meet there are awesome. Paul (the bouncer) makes me and my friends feel very welcome. The owner, Sean is always walking around making sure we’re having a great time. One of the best things that happened after this pandemic was honestly finding out that Poetry survived, and the new back patio is just great.”
