Winter in Toronto just wouldn’t be the same without a spin around the ice at Nathan Phillips Square. Seriously, it’s like a rite of passage!

Whether you’re a local or just visiting, this is the spot to be in this season. You’ll find people gliding, spinning, and even falling down here and there—it’s all part of the charm!

But don’t worry, the fun outweighs the slips! I always love seeing the city’s towering skyscrapers and the dazzling lights while I skate around—it’s just so picture-perfect.

So, whether you’re a pro or a complete novice, hitting up Nathan Phillips Square for some ice skating is sure to leave you with some warm memories for the winter.

Things to Know

Address: Nathan Phillips Square, 100 Queen St W.

Phone: 416-392-2489

Ice Skating Dates: November – March

Skating Hours: 10 AM – 10 PM

Nathan Phillips Square is named after—you guessed it—Nathan Phillips, who was the mayor of Toronto from 1955 to 1962. The square opened in 1965 and has been a well-known Toronto classic with its gorgeous rink.

But why is it the perfect spot to hit the ice? Smack in front of City Hall, you’re right in the middle of downtown, surrounded by skyscrapers and those iconic “Freedom Arches” that make the rink look magical.

The rink usually opens up around mid-November and sticks around until mid-March, as long as the weather cooperates.

It’s generally open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. However, it’s always a good idea to check the City of Toronto’s website for any updates before you head out, especially if it’s near the start or end of the season.

What to Expect

The Rink

Nathan Phillips Square has one of the biggest outdoor rinks in Toronto. There’s plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the ice, whether you’re a seasoned skater or just wobbling your way around for the first time.

But keep an eye out—there are always a few speedsters zipping by, showing off their moves (and making the rest of us look like we’re skating in slow motion).

Entry here is totally free! Yep, no tickets, no hassle—just bring your skates, and you’re all set to hit the ice.

Skate Rentals and Sharpening

No skates? No worries! There’s a rental kiosk right there at the rink.

They’ve got you covered with skates for both children and adults, helmets, hats, and mitts—all at decent prices too.

Just don’t forget the 2-hour rental period for all the items. All the skates need to be returned to the shop by 10 PM.

Oh, and if your skates are feeling a bit dull, they can sharpen them up for you too. It’s not a must but trust me, sharper blades make a big difference.

Seasonal Attractions

Holiday Fair in the Square

During the holiday season, Nathan Phillips Square turns into a festive wonderland. The Holiday Fair in the Square is a total must-see!

Imagine a lively Christmas market with cute wooden stalls where you can find everything from handmade crafts to delicious gourmet treats. You’ll also catch a few midway rides for all ages during the fair.

Plus, the whole square gets decked out with lights and decorations which makes skating in the rink even cooler!

But the fun doesn’t end when the holidays do. Even after the New Year, the square stays buzzing with winter festivals, ice sculpting competitions, and pop-up food events that keep the good vibes going all season long.

Light Displays

Once they start turning on those lights at the square, the whole place starts getting extra special—it makes night skating feel like you’re in a different world!

Picture this: you’re gliding across the ice, and the lights are reflecting off every surface, turning the rink into a glittery, almost dreamlike scene.

Whether you’re into art or just want to snap some cool photos, these light displays take the experience to the next level.

Hockey Games

Hockey games at Nathan Phillips Square bring a totally new buzz to the winter scene. Whether it’s a casual pickup game or an organized match, the energy is infectious.

There’s something about seeing a puck fly across the rink that gets everyone excited—spectators cheer and you can’t help but get caught up in the energy. It’s pure, unfiltered fun, right in the heart of Toronto.

I love watching players zip around the rink and hearing the sounds of skates slicing the ice—it’s just something you have to experience at least once during the season!

Fees

Ice skating at Nathan Phillips Square is free. However, you will need to pay if you’re renting skates.

The cost is around $10 per rental, and there’s a small fee for skate sharpening if needed. There’s also a deposit required for rentals, so make sure to bring some extra cash or a credit card.

Best Time to Go

The best time to visit Nathan Phillips Square for ice skating is during the weekdays or off-peak hours (early morning or late at night), for a less-crowded experience.
