Ever stumbled upon a place that perfectly mixes history and sports, right in the middle of Toronto? Well, let me take you on a little journey to the Mattamy Athletic Centre—one of my absolute favorite hidden gems in the city.

Whether you’re a die-hard sports fan, a fitness junkie, or just someone who appreciates a good piece of Toronto history, Mattamy’s got something for you.

From the famous ice rink where hockey legends carved their legacy to cutting-edge fitness facilities, this place is basically the city’s most exciting adult playground. We’ve got all the insider tips on how to make the most of your visit.

About the Mattamy Athletic Centre

Address: 50 Carlton St.
Phone:  416-598-5960
Hours: Monday to Sunday: 6:30 AM – 11:30 PM

Nestled right in the thick of the downtown area, the Mattamy Athletic Centre is run by Ryerson University (now called Toronto Metropolitan University).

It wasn’t always known by that name. Back in the day, it was the legendary Maple Leaf Gardens—a name that still gives hockey fans across Canada goosebumps.

Maple Leaf Gardens, built in 1931, was home to the Toronto Maple Leafs for nearly seven decades. This wasn’t just any old rink—it was where the Leafs clinched 11 Stanley Cup victories and where some of hockey’s most epic moments went down.

This venue also hosted concerts by icons like The Beatles and Elvis Presley and even saw speeches by Winston Churchill. It was more than a building—it was a cultural hotspot.

But by the early 2000s, after the Leafs moved to the Air Canada Centre (now Scotiabank Arena), the Gardens started to lose its shine. The future of the building was pretty bleak until Ryerson University and their friends decided to patch it up.

In 2012, after some serious renovations, the Mattamy Athletic Centre was born. The MAC honors the building’s incredible history while giving today’s athletes and fitness buffs a modern space to make their own.

The Mattamy Athletic Centre is not only open for their students—everyone’s free to come visit!

If you’re a hockey fan, the MAC’s ice rink is basically your dream come true. This Olympic-sized gem isn’t just for the Ryerson Rams—you can watch local leagues in action or jump into a public skate and pretend you’re a pro.

Even if hockey’s not your jam, there’s something seriously cool about gliding around on that ice where legends once played.

Lacing up your skates here feels like you’re part of something special, whether you’re channeling your inner NHL star or just out for a good time.

This multi-purpose gymnasium is the heart of the MAC’s basketball, volleyball, and other court-based activities. It’s where the Ryerson varsity teams get their sweat on, but it’s not just for them—you can totally jump in during open hours.

Whether you’re shooting hoops on the full-sized court or diving for a volleyball, this space has got you covered. They can even split the court in two if you’re looking for a more chill pick-up game.

Pro Tip:

If you’re planning to play during peak hours (late afternoons and evenings), it’s a good idea to book your court time in advance. Slots fill up quickly, especially during the school year.

Plus, there’s something special about watching a game in a venue with so much history. The MAC’s connection to the legendary Maple Leaf Gardens adds an extra layer of magic, making every game feel like a big event.
