What Locals Think Are the 8 Best Things to Do in Ajax

My first trip to Ajax was completely unplanned. My friends and I were on a road trip, and as luck would have it, our car broke down, forcing us to make an unexpected stop.

At first, we didn’t know much about this small town, but we decided to make the best of it. After chatting with some locals, we set out to explore their recommendations—and what we found was a delightful surprise.

Whether you end up in this small city by choice or chance, there are plenty of incredible experiences waiting for you if you know where to look. To help you get started, we’ve rounded up the best things to do in Ajax.

1. Picnic at Ajax Waterfront Park

Website: https://www.ajax.ca/en/play-and-discover/waterfront.aspx
Location: Ajax, ON L1S 3Z3
Operating hours: Open 24/7
Phone: +19056832951
Admission fee: FREE
Park amenities: Public restrooms, playgrounds, sports fields

Spanning 7 km across Lake Ontario’s shoreline, Ajax Waterfront Park is an ideal spot for a picnic. Weekends tend to draw a livelier crowd, with more foot traffic, so come on a weekday if you’re hoping for a quieter setting.

You can spread your blanket on the lush, well-maintained grass—under the shade of a tree if you’re after a cool retreat, or out in the open to sunbathe. The beaches are quite rocky, but you can find a few sandy spots along the water’s edge.

As tempting as the water may look, swimming isn’t a common activity in this part of Ajax. Locals often avoid it due to occasional algal blooms and higher bacteria levels during certain seasons.

Pro Tip:

For picnics, the best time to visit is during late spring to early fall, when the weather is warm, and the greenery is in full bloom.

2. Cycle the Ajax Waterfront Trail

Location: Ajax, ON L1S 3Z3
Operating hours: Open 24/7

Length: 13 km

The best way to see this little town is to follow the Ajax Waterfront Trail, a scenic pathway that stretches along the shores of Lake Ontario. After you picnic or sunbathe at the park, you can cycle or walk this trail, which leads to other attractions.

You can follow different routes along the trail marked by flora and fauna symbols. For example, the bunny symbol will lead you to Discovery Bay, the duck to Rotary Park, and the trillium flowers to Clover Ridge.

No matter the route, you can expect the path to be meticulously maintained with smooth, paved surfaces that make it accessible to everyone, regardless of fitness level. The trail is wheelchair-friendly, so outdoor fun is an inclusive experience for all.

Pro Tip:

Hike during the fall when the weather is cooler and the leaves change color, adding a vibrant backdrop to your walk. Arrive in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.

3. Go kayaking in Rotary Park

Location: 177 Lake Driveway W
Operating hours: Open 24/7
Phone: +19056832951
Park amenities: Public washrooms, pavilion, meeting room, and concession stand

Known for its quiet inlets and calm waters, Rotary Park is best enjoyed from the water—on a kayak, canoe, or small boat (whichever you prefer).

There’s a dedicated launch area right near the parking lot so you won’t have to tow your kayak from a long distance. Once on the water, you’ll paddle through a narrow creek that opens into the lake, where you’ll feel the gentle pull of the current.

What I like about kayaking here is that there’s so much wildlife to admire. As you paddle around, keep your eyes peeled for ospreys, ring-billed gulls, and other birds hunting over the lake.

Pro Tip:

Access to the park and the launch area is free. However, parking does come with a fee on certain days.

In the summer, you can park for free on the weekdays, but the weekends will cost about $10 for three hours. Parking is free throughout winter.

4. Go tobogganing at Ajax Waterfront Hill

Location: Lake Driveway E
Operating hours: Open 24/7
Admission fee: FREE
Park amenities: Parking lots, benches, and hiking trail

If you’re visiting Ajax in winter, you shouldn’t miss out on the opportunity to go tobogganing near the waterfront. You’ll find the hill right between the Veterans Point Gardens and Paradise Beach.

The hill is known for its wide, smooth slopes, which should be easy enough for beginners to do. This exhilarating experience is ideally shared with friends or family.

The best part? Your furry friends won’t miss out on some winter fun because they are welcome at this dog-friendly park.

Pro Tip:

The closest parking lot to the tobogganing hill is Lake Driveway E, which has limited spots. If there are no vacant spots, you can park at the Veterans Point Parking Lot, just a short walk away.

5. Watch a race at Ajax Downs

The crowd is a lively mix of seasoned racing enthusiasts, curious families, and casual visitors, proving that you don’t need to be a gambler to enjoy the thrill of the race.

Families often come just for the spectacle, and it’s easy to see why—the excitement starts building the moment the horses approach the gate. It’s an experience that’s both exhilarating and family-friendly, perfect for a memorable day at the track.
