The Ultimate Insider Guide for a Great Time at the CNE Toronto 2024

guide-to-cne-toronto

As a kid, I always dreaded the end of summer because it meant waking up early and doing homework again.

But there was one thing that always made it better—the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), or as we locals call it, The Ex!

Just thinking about it brings back memories of warm summer air, the smell of cotton candy, and the sound of playful laughter all around.

The Ex is basically a massive, annual fair in Toronto that’s been around for over a century. It offers a mix of food, fun, and festivities—everything from thrilling rides to quirky food vendors and live shows. Think of it as a giant playground for all ages.

Planning to hit up the CNE this summer? Here’s your complete guide to making the most out of your visit!

What to Do

Enjoy thrilling rides

Looking for fun at the CNE? If you’re into heart-pounding experiences, you’ll find thrill rides like roller coasters, drop towers, and spinning attractions.

I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to rides, but my braver friends swear The Zipper is the best—after eating, of course.

Hop on the Sky Ride for an amazing bird’s-eye view of the entire fairgrounds. It’s also perfect for snapping some awesome photos.

For families and those who prefer a gentler ride (aka me), there are classics like the Carousel, Tilt-a-Whirl, and Bumper Cars.

And hey, there’s no shame in sticking with the Kiddie Coaster as an adult! The Ex makes sure everyone has fun in their own way.

Challenge yourself with fun games

When it comes to games, the CNE is a carnival lover’s paradise. You’ll find all the classics—Ring Toss, Basketball Shoot, and even Beer Pong—just waiting for you to test your luck.

If you want to show off your skills, Skee-Ball, Whack-a-Mole, and Claw Machines are the way to go. Plus, they’ve got some pretty cool prizes up for grabs!

For some quick fun, check out the arcade games scattered around the fairgrounds. They’ve got pinball machines and video games for everyone to enjoy.

Looking for a real challenge? Check out the notoriously tough games like Gun Ball, Rail Runner, and Bushel Baskets. These seem to frustrate guests every year so be ready for a test of both patience and your wallet.

I’m horrible at these but that doesn’t stop me from trying every year!

Dig into tasty treats

The food at the CNE is a whole experience in itself, with a crazy mix of options that cater to every taste.

You can’t go wrong with classic fair treats like cotton candy, funnel cakes, and corn dogs—those are must-haves at any carnival. But since you’re at the CNE, why not go big?

The Ex is famous for its wild and quirky creations—think Dill Pickle Cotton Candy, Deep Fried Pizza, and Footlong Fries.

If you’re into unique eats, check out gourmet options like loaded fries, exotic fusion dishes, and creative spins on traditional fare.

And definitely don’t miss out on local favorites like peameal bacon sandwiches and buttery lobster rolls.

Honestly, the plethora of options can be a bit overwhelming. I recommend taking a stroll through this year’s vendors before diving into your food crawl.

Check out awesome performances

I always get super excited for the live performances at the CNE—you just can’t miss them!

You’ll catch a mix of music—from pop and rock to country and more—featuring both local stars and big-name artists.

If one of your favorite performers is on the lineup this year, you’re in for a double treat!

But that’s not all—there are also awesome shows with killer acrobatics, mind-blowing magic, and hilarious comedy that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat.

Plus, you might stumble upon cultural performances showcasing different traditions and art forms. This adds an extra layer of cool to the entertainment.

When is CNE Toronto in 2024?

CNE Toronto 2024 runs from August 16 to September 2. Rides are open on weekdays from 11 AM to midnight and on weekends from 10 AM to midnight. Note that Labor Day Monday may affect these hours.

Where can I buy tickets?

You can grab tickets online or at the fair. The Admission Pass covers ground entry and access to all shows and exhibits.

The Ride All Day Pass includes everything in the Admission Pass plus unlimited midway rides. An extra fee is charged if you buy your tickets online.

How do I get there?

By Train: The GO Train takes you directly to the CNE through the Exhibition GO Station. You can get tickets for the GO Train on their official website. They offer a One-Day Weekend Pass ($10) and various rates for Weekday Group Passes ($30-$60).

By Bus: TTC buses and streetcars stop at the Dufferin Gate Loop (on the west end) and Exhibition Loop (on the east end). For the best route info, check their website.

By Bike: Follow the Martin Goodman Trail along the waterfront to Lake Shore Boulevard and British Columbia Road (Dufferin Street). You can find more details about the trail and access points here.

By Private Vehicle: The CNE is at Exhibition Place, just north of Lake Shore Boulevard West between Strachan and Dufferin Streets. You can get there directly from the Gardiner Expressway.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Comfy shoes: Comfort is key since you’ll be doing a lot of walking.
  • Light jacket: This can come in handy during unpredictable weather.
  • Sunscreen: Don’t forget to protect your skin if you’re visiting in the morning.
  • Cash: While a few vendors accept cards, many are cash-only, so it’s smart to have some on hand.
  • Water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the busy day.
