Gwartzman’s Art Supplies began its operations in the 1960s by selling discounted canvases. Over time, they offered other art supplies to cater to the artists’ needs.

The store, despite its size, offers a variety of art supplies and items for crafts. Artists can find the items they need based on their medium of choice.

They also offer a wide range of art materials, such as different kinds and shades of charcoal. That’s a definite win in our opinion, as professional artists might have a specific tool in mind for their projects.

A children’s section is available in-store and online. Arts and crafts making is always a good activity for kids, and having items available for them is a big plus.

Art kits are also available for schools and art teachers. These can be used for art activities in classes.

We also liked that the art supplies were affordable and of good quality. They also offer discount coupons and gift cards.

The store has an outlet and an online store. This makes it easier to get art materials at one’s convenience.

We would also like to mention that the store has maintained its branch for over 75 years. This increases our confidence in their know-how when it comes to stocking and recommending art supplies.

That said, their retail store is also on the smaller side. The space feels cramped compared to other stores.

The art supplies were unorganized, thus making the store feel cramped.

Despite this, several store goers shared with us their great retail and online experiences with the store. The store staff were one of the reasons for the great experience.

Apparently, the staff are quite knowledgeable, providing useful advice to customers on which items to buy. They also helped online customers by immediately addressing their concerns through email.

The store also has a reasonable exchange policy. While they do not accept returns, customers are eligible for an exchange or store credit.

We like that it is easy for customers to replace their items, particularly damaged ones. They just need to inform the store immediately.

Just note that there are items that are not eligible for exchanges, such as pens, markers, gold & silver leaf, cut canvas, paper or board, drafting tables, spray paints, spray varnishes, clearance items, assembled kits, and custom orders.

Pros

  • Knowledgeable staff
  • Rare items available
  • Art materials at a discounted price

Cons

  • Small store
  • Store feels cramped due to unorganized product placements

Customer Reviews

Specific selection of art materials

“Sooo much specific selection in what looks like a small store. It’s great when you want to do something like buy a single sketching pencil to replace a favourite that is all used up, as opposed to buying a whole kit on Amazon. (Though they also have whole kits). The staff is also very friendly and knowledgeable.” – Melody T.

Impressive knowledge of staff

“I was very impressed with the knowledge base of the sales staff helping me. He explained the history of the brush and I appreciated that. I found what I wanted.” – Mary-Ann L.

Above Ground Art Supplies has been around since 1983 and currently has branches covering the East, West, and Downtown Toronto. We think having multiple locations is great as it gives art lovers easy access to the shop.

The store specialises in providing art supplies and hard-to-find art resources for art enthusiasts; beginners and professionals alike.

The store carries brands like Schmincke for water colours, and the Pantone – colour bridge set for those that need a colour guide.

Interestingly, the store also has their own art supplies brand. They offer their own-branded canvases, paints, brushes, and more at affordable prices.

We find Above Ground’s art supplies quite good, upon trying some of them. The quality of the materials is in between beginner’s art supplies like Winsor and Newton and professional-grade ones like Sennelier.

Another thing we liked about the store is that they offer discounts for students, as well as regular sale items. This is helpful and allows students to practise their craft without worrying too much about the prices.

While all the stores are spacious, they feel like a maze because of their layout. The way the art materials were arranged made the store feel overwhelming.

We suggest having a list of the products you’re buying before going to the store. This will make your store experience faster and less jam packed into the crowd.

As for the store, a better store layout and product shelving might help the customers navigate the area better.

We also highly commend the store’s staff. Whether online or in-store, they provide excellent customer service.

We heard that the staff were friendly and helpful, and we agree. A customer shared how one staff helped them find a good replacement for the out-of-stock item that they initially came to the store for.

The staff also immediately corrected any errors that customers encountered. A customer had a hiccup with their online purchase and the staff immediately responded.

The store offers customers 15 days for a return and 30 days for exchange provided that the items are in their original condition and packaging, complete with the receipt.

This is ample time for customers to return or exchange an item, particularly if they’re far from the branch of their choice.

Certain products can only be exchanged for store credit. The store’s website clearly specifies these products for easier exchanges.

Pros

  • Friendly and helpful staff
  • Offers rare brands and their self-produced brand

Cons

  • Crammed store
  • Store layout not newbie-friendly

DeSerres has been a staple art supplies store in the country for more than a century. Since 1908, the store has continued to grow its selection and provided programmes catering to artists and those who appreciate art.

The store offers art supplies, prints and framing, and materials for various crafts and hobbies. Children and adults can start their artistic ventures with the store’s items and classes.

The art store has a good selection of the famous and high-end brands such as Winsor and Newton and Sennelier.

What’s also worth noting is the store’s art programmes for children and professionals. They provide the kits and the classes for the different groups to fully enjoy their art items.

We think this adds a lot of value to the brand as the students are guided by professionals on how to use and enjoy their art materials.

Another thing that caught our attention is the store’s (re)art programme, their recycling initiative. This allows individuals to bring their eco-friendly art supplies to the store for recycling.

We like this as it will enable artists to dispose of their art supplies responsibly and be recycled.

Their prices, however, are higher compared to the competition. Several customers mentioned how pricey the items at the store are.

On that note, it’s good that the store offers discounts – so we’d advise you to watch out for these limited sales.

The store has a Creative Club where better discounts are provided to those who sign up. We also like that they provide gift cards.

In terms of accessibility, the art store has various branches across the country. This makes it easy to shop or attend classes.

Their stores are clean and well-stocked as well. It is easy to navigate the space and find what you’re looking for.

There are mixed reviews for their online store, however. Though online stocks are well-updated, it takes a long time for the store to ship out the items.

That is why we advise that you pick them up in-store instead. This is to save on shipping costs and for you to get your items faster.

Experience-wise, we’re told their staff are generally helpful and respond well to customer enquiries. A customer shared that staff even recommended the best art supplies based on her personal needs.

The store has a strict return and exchange policy. Items for return or exchange should be returned with the original packaging and receipt within 30 days.

For online returns and exchanges, the buyer covers the shipping fee unless they did not receive the item or if they received a damaged one.

While we find the policy quite strict, they are reportedly quick to issue the return or refund requested by the customers.

Pros

  • Recycling programme for kids
  • Good variety of art materials

Cons

  • Products can get pricey
  • Online purchases take long to be shipped out

Amazing staff

Amazing staff. Mary and Natasha were both super helpful assisting me when I was looking for a quality paint brush for my minis. Even gave me a small glass of water to check the brush tips!!

Nicole at checkout was an absolute angel and we had a great chat about Warhammer. 10/10 will be back again :)” – Dustin F.

They have what you need

“Very well stocked supplies for all art projects from beginner to professional.  Prices are high. I buy all my painting materials there. Courteous and efficient staff. They have what you need.” – Leslie M.

Michaels Stores, Inc. was founded in 1973. Since then, it has grown into the largest provider of arts and crafts supplies in North America.

Products-wise, the store is one of the largest arts and crafts store for a reason. The store has a great inventory for artists and those exploring different craft projects.

What’s also worth mentioning is that they provide materials for unique activities like baking, knitting, and floral arrangements.

They also carry well-known brands like Winsor and Newton, as well as private brands like Artminds, Artist’s Loft, Creatology, and more. This makes it easier to look for alternatives in case they do not have stocks of the one you’re looking for.

The products tend to be on the expensive side. That’s why the regular promotions are also another aspect that we, and other customers, highly enjoy.

Ongoing promos are always posted on their website. Hence, it is best to check the site before going to the store.

Location-wise, Michael’s is available in multiple locations, making it easy for customers to go to the one nearest their area. Parking is not an issue either.

The store’s layout also makes it a delight to go around. The items are well-placed and you can get what you’re looking for in minutes.

The stores have a light and relaxed atmosphere, making the overall store visit a good one.

Another thing worth noting is that the store is fully-stocked whether online or in-store. The customer can check the store’s website and the stocks are reflected.

This makes it easy for the customer to order and pick up their item. Same-day delivery is also available.

The staff was friendly, greeted customers, and was helpful. There were instances, however, where they apparently used technical terms, making it hard for customers to understand the service the store was providing.

The store’s returns and exchange policies are good. If the item does not satisfy the customer, they can return or exchange the item at any of the store’s locations within 60 days.

For refunds, purchases made with a debit card or PayPal are refunded as cash. Items for return or exchange must be new, unused, and in their original packaging. This applies except for those with defects.

Overall, this is a good return, refund, and exchange policy. Customers can exchange their item or receive cash as a refund rather than a gift certificate.

Pros

  • Website coupons make the art supplies more affordable
  • Helpful staff

Cons

  • Art supplies are on the expensive side
  • Framing services could be improved

Midoco Art & Office Supplies is a family-owned arts and crafts store that began in January 1978. Since then, the store has grown to four locations, covering East, North, South, and West Canada.

The store has a great selection of supplies for artists and crafters. The store provides them with well-known brands and professional-grade art materials.

Some of the brands provided by the store are LAMY, Van Gogh, Itoya, and more.

Arts, crafts, and games for children of all ages are also available in the store. Even kids-at-heart can enjoy the different games that can be bought in-store.

We also like that the store always aims to bring something new to the store. They have a dedicated team that’s on the lookout for new and exciting products for their customers.

Another plus is that the materials are priced reasonably. It’s easier to pick an art activity without having to break the bank.

The store might be small, but it is navigable. It’s easy to find what you’re looking for because of the store’s uncomplicated setup.

However, there is a discrepancy between the stocks online and those in-store. Some items might be available on-site rather than online.

That said, we like that the ease of shopping in-store is also the same ease of buying art materials from their website. Customers can shop for their items online and have them picked up the following day.

Customers we’ve spoke to said that the staff was great in attending to them both on-site and online. They were approachable, eager to help, and friendly.

In our own experience, we also liked about the staff was that they never pushed a sale. We were able to shop peacefully.

However, they were unable to manage the flow of people well, particularly when the store reopened. They can do so by limiting the number of people allowed in-store.

The store has a considerate returns or exchanges policy. Items in their original packaging with a receipt can be returned within 14 days of delivery.

They are also eligible for a full refund, exchange, or store credit.

If there is evident damage to the packaging of the shipped item, the customer can refuse and have it returned, which is reassuring.

Pros

  • Accommodating staff
  • Variety of arts and crafts supplies available in store for beginners and professionals

Cons

  • Influx of people in-store need to be managed better
  • Items available in store but not online

Customer Reviews

Fantastic and charming

“Fantastic, charming art supply store with lots of variety in a tiny place. Don’t let all the cutesy gifts in the front fool you, they’ve got a good mixture of amateur and professional supplies for everything from painting and drawing to screen printing and crafting. I’ve come looking for very specific items (Fine-tec, Tombow, Blackwing…) And they had it every time. Helpful staff that never pushes a sale.” – Mel D.

Cool great store

“cool great store to explore and find lots of niche brands. good for gifts and kids stuff, but also really great selection of professional arts materials like I found some holbein water-soluble oils here! 😮 also really great helpful and friendly staff, never had a disappointing experience! wholeheartedly recommend shopping online and pickup :)” – Lis X.
