Scale Up Your Family Fun at Reptilia Zoo in Toronto [Everything You Need to Know and More]

guide-to-reptilia-zoo-toronto

I received an unexpected invitation from my sister and her family to visit Reptilia Zoo in Toronto. At first, I hesitated, as I’ve always been a bit wary of snakes, but with their reassurance (and by this, I meant childish taunts), I decided to give it a go.

I’m glad I came because as soon as we stepped into Reptilia Zoo, I was floored.

From sneaky snakes to cool-looking lizards, I found something cool at every turn. I never thought I’d be so into these critters, but man, they’re fascinating.

After our awesome trip, I just had to spread the word about Reptilia Zoo. So, I figured why not whip up a guide to help other families like ours have a blast exploring all the amazing animals here?

So, grab your crew and get ready for an epic time at Reptilia Zoo in Toronto!

What is Reptilia Zoo in Toronto?

Reptilia Zoo in Toronto is Canada’s largest indoor reptile zoo, spanning over 84,000 sq ft with over 250 reptiles, amphibians, and arachnids. It offers family-friendly activities like self-guided tours, live shows, parties, and camps!

History behind Reptilia Zoo in Toronto

reptilia-zoo-toronto

Reptilia Zoo in Toronto all began with its original site in Vaughan, spanning 25,000 square feet. Expanding further, it established a second location in Whitby in 2018, converting a former 31,000-square-foot Rona store.

The London City Council eventually approved Reptilia’s expansion into Westmount Mall in 2022. Since then, Reptilia has supplied reptiles for various shows and productions, including Guinness, Murdoch Mysteries, Canada’s Greatest Know-It-All, and more.

Reptilia Zoo Animals

Reptilia Zoo boasts more than 250 awesome animals, but here are the crowd’s (and some of my own) favorites!

Green Iguana

Green iguanas are like the mood rings of the reptile world—they can change their color depending on how they’re feeling or where they are! If they’re feeling stressed, they might darken their hues to camouflage or look fiercer to other creatures.

These guys usually hang out in the wild for about 10 to 15 years, but if you take good care of them (and feed them right), they could be your lifelong buddies. When it comes to food, they’re all about that veggie life, munching on leaves, flowers, and fruits.

American Alligator

American alligators are nature’s engineers, creating special spots called “gator holes” that become mini-oases during dry spells. These holes are like aquatic apartment complexes, sheltering fish, turtles, and other critters when the going gets tough.

Once endangered, these powerful reptiles have made a comeback thanks to protective measures and conservation efforts. Living up to 35-50 years in the wild, these gators are true survivors, adapting to whatever menu Mother Nature serves up!

Common Snapping Turtle

Common Snapping Turtles boast impressive life spans of up to 30-50 years or more if they dodge predators and human interference.  With their feisty attitudes and powerful jaws, they’re not to be trifled with, ready to deliver a sharp nip if they feel threatened.

They’re also one of the biggest freshwater turtles in North America. These giants of the turtle world can grow to massive sizes, sometimes stretching over 18 inches long and weighing a hefty 35 pounds.

Reticulated Python

Reticulated Pythons are the aquatic acrobats of the snake world, with a flair for both swimming and snacking. These serpents are practically part-fish, gracefully gliding through rivers, streams, and ponds in search of their next meal.

Anything from fish to frogs is fair game, and when it’s time to dine, they don’t bother with cutlery. Using their strong, muscular bodies, they wrap around their prey like a cozy blanket, giving them a tight hug until their dinner runs out of breath—yikes!

Senegal Chameleon

Senegal Chameleons wield color like a master painter. Their vibrant hues aren’t just for blending in; they’re a language, expressing everything from cool calmness to fiery excitement.

With a sticky tongue that’s a precision weapon, they snatch up snacks with the finesse of a seasoned hunter. But don’t be fooled by their delicate dining habits; these chameleons have voracious appetites, craving a varied insect diet to thrive.

Spectacled Caiman

Spectacled Caimans are the guardians of Central and South American waterways, sporting a distinctive “spectacled” look thanks to the bony ridge between their eyes. They can cruise the waters for a respectable 25 to 40 years, though with the right care.

These apex predators are like the superheroes of their ecosystems, keeping prey populations in check and maintaining balance in their watery realms. And, these caimans are quite the vocal bunch, filling the air with hisses, grunts, and bellows.
