We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

Whether it’s for routine checkups or more complex surgeries, you need the best professionals to deal with your pets.

That’s why we conducted in-depth research to ensure that only the best veterinarians in Toronto made our list!

Here we’ll explore the best options in the city and see what they’re best at (or worst at!) so you can make a smart decision and get your pets the treatment they deserve.

The Cost of Seeing a Veterinarian in Toronto

Before we move on to the prices, let’s list down a few notes first to understand how veterinarian costs work:

  • The costs for the same procedure will vary depending on the vet.
  • The costs also vary depending on the clinic.
  • There are certain treatment plans that require consistent medication and checkups. Thus, there will be recurring charges.
  • You can get up to 90% off your total services if you have a pet insurance plan. Some clinics provide assistance with these matters.
  • There are instances wherein vets will offer additional diagnostic testing to further examine your pet. This will cost you, of course, and it is up to you to proceed or not.

The table below shows the estimated costs of the most common vet services:

Service Estimate Cost
Routine checkups$50 - $250
Spay or neuter$160 - $220
Vaccination$15 - $28 (per shot)
Dental cleaning$70 - $400
Heartworm test$45 - $50
Physical exams$45 - $50
Geriatric screening$85 - $110
Bloodwork$80 - $200
X-rays$150 - $250
Ultrasounds$300 - $600
Hospitalizations$600 - $3,500
Surgery$1,500 - $5,000

The Best Veterinarians in Toronto

Take note that most of the clinics we featured still have health protocols in place. This means that most visitations are done on the curbside, while others accept a limited number of clients inside the clinic.

Below are the metrics we used to judge the vet clinics in this review:

Quality of pet care Sensitivity and friendliness of the staff, veterinarians, and registered veterinary technicians (RVTs). Also, we checked partnered hospitals for after-hour emergencies, as well as in-clinic equipment.
Range of services Medical services offered (must be complete with preventive examinations, surgeries, and diagnostics), treatment of non-traditional pets (apart from dogs and cats), and supplementary products available (online or in-store dog essentials, pharmacy, food, etc.).
Costs and payment options Reasonable rates and availability of payment plan options, financing options (if any), and pet insurance assistance (if any).
Safety and location of the clinic Overall safety of the clinic and accessibility of the location (including the partnered hospital/s for after-hours emergency).

Juno Veterinary is Toronto’s first membership-based veterinary practice.

Their membership provides a better experience for everyone. Their vets are able to give thoughtful and compassionate care to each pet that comes their way.

We think that going for a membership is worth it because its benefits include one annual exam, same-day or next-day appointments, 24/7 virtual care, and upfront and transparent pricing.

What we like about this vet is how comprehensive their services are. These include Urgent Care, Preventative Care, Surgery, Pharmacy, Virtual Care, as well as Dental Care.

We like how convenient their location is as well. You can find them right between Roxborough Street and Rowanwood Avenue—one of the most beautiful and pet-friendly communities in Toronto.

We’re in love with the interiors of the clinic! Most vet clinics these days feel like a lab or an office, so we’re liking how theirs look like a living room.

Their clinic is very comforting and their team is very friendly and welcoming—it’s a very pleasurable experience with them. We highly recommend!

Customer Reviews

“We had our first visit to Juno vet this week for an introductory wellness examination and we were very impressed at the level of kindness, professionalism and knowledge they displayed! We really appreciated them displaying the total cost breakdown prior to reaching the front counter, unlike all of the other vets we’ve been to! We will definitely be coming back and signing up for the full subscription service. Great place!” — Brandon G

“We had an amazing experience at Juno today! The website and app were fast and easy to use. All the staff at Juno was warm and welcoming and the vets were diligent and caring! This is the first vet clinic where our cat felt comfortable enough to roam around out of his carrier! Can’t wait to bring our younger cat to this beautiful facility.” — Laurn Bentley

Touching on its pet care quality, we can say that we’re fairly satisfied with Wellesley Animal Hospital. We just have a few concerns that we’ll discuss further but we’ll start off with the great things first.

One of the best advantages here is the mixture of convenience and comfort to both the owner and pet.

For owners, they can easily get full control of their pet’s health information Wellesley Animal Hospital App. It’s also the fastest way to book an appointment, request prescription meds, and even order food from their boutique.

For the pets’ side of things, they’ll be met with a woolen blanket upon entry and the boarding area has heated floors too. Each pet also has an assigned vet or vet tech to supervise them with all their needs.

Unfortunately, there are a few holes in this seemingly wholesome experience. A couple of customers noted an unwelcoming attitude from some of the staff members and there are instances when it’s difficult to book.

But if you do manage to book an appointment (which isn’t hard, in our experience), you’ll get access to full-service care for dogs, cats, and other small animals.

We’re also concerned with pet safety and their overall well-being so we’re pleased to find that they’re Fear-Free Certified professionals. This basically means that the staff members have adequate training to provide stress-free care.

In matters of payment, we love how they offer flexible online payment options as well as assistance with pet insurance and pet financing options. With all these combined, we think that it minimizes the hassle for the owners, which is always a great bonus.

As a final matter that we’ll touch on, we also like that they have two sister hospitals that you can come to for after-hour emergencies. It can just be a bit confusing because both hospitals have different time frames, but it works for now.

Pros

  • Offers the Wellesley Animal Hospital App
  • Full-service hospital with updated equipment
  • Uses calming pheromones in the hospital
  • RECOVER CPR certified vets and vet techs
  • Fear-free certified professionals
  • Communicates in 7 languages
  • Only employs licensed RVTs
  • Heated floors in boarding area
  • Various payment and financing options
  • Assists with pet insurance needs

Cons

  • Can be difficult to book due to a high volume of clients
  • Expensive medical services
  • Minor issues with staff attitude

In line with our assessments, animal welfare is one of our biggest concerns. And Beaches Animal Hospital is our favorite when it comes to providing exceptional care and compassion to pets.

It’s true that it’s difficult to evaluate a clinic’s friendliness but that’s what our survey showed us. In fact, even Google Reviews reflects this – and our survey found many past clients expressing satisfaction with the top-notch care that their pets received.

We believe you’ll appreciate the solid online services that they offer, especially if you’re a busy fur parent. They now offer Telemedicine, so you can book online consultations via phone or video communication.

Though if it were up to us, we still prefer in-person consultations in general, and the hospital still delivered in this area. To sum it up, they basically have everything you’ll need in a vet clinic, from preventive healthcare to hospitalization and diagnostics.

Another thing we’d like to note is that they have a 24/7 online store where you can get free shipping for orders $100 and up. You can also opt for pick-ups… but this can be tricky because following up the orders is such a chore with this one.

While the hospital doesn’t have flexible payment plan options, they do assist with pet insurance. Plus, customers also noted that their rates are fair and they don’t try to upsell you with any unnecessary tests.

In terms of after-hour emergencies, you do have to contact their partner hospitals to be accommodated. Similar to our first entry, they also have to partner hospitals that can receive your pets during unexpected hours.

Pros

  • Online consultations available via Telemedicine
  • Complete-service hospital
  • Accredited Member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)
  • Assists with pet insurance needs
  • Established in 1973 (first pet clinic in the east side
  • 7 doctors and 20 support staff
  • Competitive rates
  • 24/7 online store for deliveries or pick-ups
  • Multi-awarded vet clinic (Toronto Star Reader’s Choice Awards)

Cons

  • Difficult communication for orders on pick-up
  • No payment plan options

Wonderful and supportive team

I love my care with Beaches Animal Hospital. I’ve had a very sick kitten and Beaches have been nothing but wonderful and supportive. I trust my pets in Beaches’ hands wholeheartedly. Late night update calls, honesty and transparency with plans of care – I wouldn’t go anywhere else. (My only grievance is there are no payment plan options unless you sign up with a third party) – Brittany-Lyne Carriere

Recommend Beaches Animal Hospital to everybody.Thank you to all of you!! – Daniela Parasca

Safety and location of clinic ★★★★★ (5/5)

As a vet clinic, Leslieville Animal Hospital is one of the few that were able to impress us with customer care. Overall, there are a few hiccups that may affect your experience but nothing too serious to put you off.

Starting with its range of services, you can basically find everything here (as expected) from wellness and vaccinations to surgeries. They also specialize in dogs and cats, making them experts in the area since 2007.

One thing that we liked, in particular, is that they have a pet checker online. Note that this isn’t a special feature that’s unique to the clinic, but it’s a great way to get a quick assessment of your pet’s health.

With regards to animal safety, we didn’t encounter any issues with the care they provide. As a matter of fact, many clients shared with us that their pets loved going back to the clinic – a good sign of great care for us.

Still in respect of client care, the booking system is seamless, although it’s hard to get someone on the phone sometimes. We also heard instances wherein clients didn’t get a call-back, so communication might not just be their strongest suit.

To make up for this, they have a wealth of readily accessible pet resources up on their site. It’s packed with thousands of professionally-written articles as well as how-to videos for owners to follow.

The only major concern that we see is their limited availability. Not only are they closed on weekends, but they’re also not open for emergencies, though clients can contact their partner hospitals.

Additionally, they’re also a bit tight on payment plan options… but they’re actually a bit more competitively priced than others. You may have to shell out a lot of cash, though, for medical surgeries which can be inconvenient.

Pros

  • Full-service vet clinic
  • Specializes in dogs and cats
  • Pet health checker online
  • Seamless booking system
  • Thousands of resources online
  •  24/7 online store
  • Competitive rates
  • Comprehensive evaluation and checkup
  • Consistent follow-up calls

Cons

  • Limited availability
  • No payment plan options
  • Difficult to communicate at times
  • Expensive surgeries

Excellent care for pets

My two cats receive excellent care here. The doctors genuinely like animals and issue follow up calls to see how the boys are doing every time they have their teeth cleaned or receive their shots. – Nancy Beiman

Our vet is Dr. Kerry Tait. She is very professional and personable. She is compassionate, caring and it’s obvious she loves animals. For comprehensive animal care at reasonable prices, Jane Animal Hospital is a wise choice. Let’s list down why we think going with them can be a good decision.

First, the clinic is well-trusted in the area, many past clients told us. Among various clinics within the zone, this one boasts a significant number of clients with favorable reviews on its watch.

Second, they have some of the best rates we’ve encountered in the city in terms of singular, one-time services. The charges always fall within Toronto’s average, so they won’t break the pet owner’s bank in the long run.

Take note that, of course, certain services (especially more complex or multiple ones) will cost a lot more. Still, in that sense, their prices are still reasonable even though there aren’t any payment plan options available.

Third, while online consultations aren’t always our go-to preference, this hospital does it the best. Why? Because not only do they have various formats for this (video, calls, texts), but the prices are also slightly cheaper than most.

Even the in-clinic virtual examination starts at a fair rate. Plus, it’s one of the things that clients were always happy to note when sharing their experience with us.

Since customer communication also matters to us, we love that they have a live chat agent ready to answer all your questions. And yes, it’s a real person on the other end of the line.

There are only two major issues that we had with this clinic.

One, setting up appointments can be such a pain, especially during busy seasons. They probably need to work on their capacity soon.

And two, they don’t have a partner hospital that’s 24/7 ready to accept emergency clients. That’s an important service for pet owners!

Pros

  • Solid customer reputation within the area
  • Reasonable rates on all services
  • Various formats for online consultations
  • Favorable rates for online consultations
  • Real live chat agent available
  • Online shop with great discounts
  • Fast turnaround times for diagnostic tests results

Cons

  • No payment plan options
  • No direct after-hours emergency partners
  • Issues with booking appointments at times

Incredibly easy process

I can not say enough great things about this vet. I needed to get my cat in to see a vet fast and they were able to give me a same day appointment. I was also running late and they were super accommodating. The vet tech Kaitlyn and the vet was fantastic and made the whole process incredibly easy. 10/10 experience. – Desirée Eldridge

Amazing service at fair prices

Recently, moved to T.O. and didn’t have a vet. So when the new kitten was sick and couldn’t get into a vets office, after calling 13 of them. Jane’s animal hospital worked hard on getting me a cancelation and then gave mazing service that felt honest and fair priced. Great people there! Now our little one is bouncing back and full of energy. – Jay Stofleth

Toronto Central Animal Clinic earns a spot in our list for its pet care using top-of-the-line tech. Here are a few things you can expect with this vet clinic.

For starters, we love their availability, making them a flexible choice for busy pet owners. They may open a bit later than other clinics, but at least they’re open on a Sunday.

Next, we favor the way they receive pets in the clinic – everyone seems very caring, from the tech vets to the front desk staff. What’s even better is that they keep clients in the loop of the treatment progress and didn’t fail us with constant updates.

Another notable thing that we loved is their high-tech equipment, as they now use class-IV laser therapy and CO2 lasers for surgeries. Not every clinic offers these kinds of services, so we’re happy to find them here.

Booking an appointment is also a fantastic experience and they have one of the fastest customer responses we found. Unfortunately, you may have trouble getting a free slot because the clinic tends to be busy these days.

Finally, we appreciate that the prices aren’t outrageous versus other clinics offering the same services. However, they’re only partnered with one hospital for emergencies, so there aren’t more options in case there’s a large volume of clients.
