Top 5 Black Hair Salons in Toronto for Slay-Worthy Locks

best-black-hair-salons-toronto
We extensively test and research all services we review. Here's why you can trust us.

My friend recently moved to the 6ix, and so I dutifully showed her around for a couple of days. Naturally, she turned heads everywhere we went—girl’s got the kind of look that stops traffic (think Zendaya meets Destiny’s Child-era Beyoncé).

But the one question that stumped me? “Where are the best black hair salons in Toronto?”

Hold up—apparently rocking flawless waves and fierce braids wasn’t just genetic magic!

After grilling my friends and coworkers and basically living on Google for a hot minute, I came back with the top 5. Spoiler alert: she ended up with fire hair (goddess braids, bouncy curls, the whole shebang!).

So, to all my melanin-rich queens out there searching for the perfect Toronto black hair salon, consider this your cheat sheet! Check out the top spots I found to help you up your mane game.

How much are black hair services in Toronto?

In Toronto, expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $200 or more for black hair services like braiding, weaves, coloring, or treatments.
Costs may also vary, depending on the salon, stylist experience, and the specific service you choose. It’s always best to contact the salon directly for a quote.

How We Chose the Best Black Hair Salons in Toronto

Expertise in Black Hair Textures: We prioritized salons with stylists who specialize in working with various black hair textures, like kinky, coiled, curly, and wavy hair.
Range of Services: We looked for salons offering a diverse menu of services, including braiding, weaving, natural hair care, relaxers, coloring, and styling.
Healthy Hair Practices: We aimed to find salons that prioritize healthy hair practices like scalp treatments, deep conditioning, and minimal heat styling.
Positive Client Reviews: We considered salons with consistently positive reviews from Black clientele, highlighting aspects like skill, experience, and atmosphere.
Competitive Pricing:  We included salons that offer competitive pricing for black hair services, catering to various budgets.
Product Selection: We considered salons that carry a good selection of high-quality hair care products designed specifically for black hair.
Online Presence: We included salons with active websites or social media pages showcasing their work, stylists, and salon environment.

Urban Curls Boutique is owned by Keina Morgan, a certified curl expert with over 14 years of experience. Her impressive background includes training stylists and even working with educators from major hair product companies.

Her salon’s signature service is the “Deva Curly Cut,” and they specialize in all curl textures, from loose waves to tight coils. Bonus points for being a gender-fluid salon that focuses on time per service, not just the style itself.

Another cool feature we love is their “First Timer” service. They’ll style your curls naturally, teach you maintenance tips, and even send you home with a treatment and care guide—perfect for anyone new to their curl journey.

Beyond cuts, they’re also experts in wigs, extensions, braids, coloring, blowouts, and styling.

Students and seniors get a discount too, which is always a plus.

The only caveat was a couple of mentions of sudden cancellations, which we agree can be frustrating.

Founded in 2006, The Curl Ambassadors has been in the curl game for a while. We like that their stylists, called “FABU” Stylists/Curl Coaches, go through specialized curl training on top of their regular certifications.

All visits begin with a consultation, which we think is always a good sign—they take the time to understand your hair.

Speaking of hair, they cater to every black hair type imaginable, from loose waves to tight coils, even for those transitioning from relaxed hair.

We adore their signature service, the “Dry-Cut Curly” technique.  Basically, certified curl experts tailor the cut specifically to your unique curls.

They also offer a “Curly-Doo” service, a fantastic option for first-timers. You’ll get a personalized consultation on products, techniques, and tools, followed by a wash, condition, style, and a “Curl Care Plan”!

Special coloring services are also offered using ammonia-free products.

Sadly, we heard reports of customers feeling rushed during appointments, resulting in less-than-perfect results.

Her mission is to make every woman feel like royalty, and we’re pretty sure they’re nailing it.

On top of their pampering atmosphere, they offer a range of services specifically tailored to black hair needs. Their specialty treatments include deep moisture treatments, clarifying treatments for removing build-up, and scalp revitalizing.

We also love their smoothing treatments like the STS, Brazilian blowout, and liquid keratin treatment. All of these are formaldehyde-free, which is a major plus for healthy hair.

Curl Bar is owned by Trudie Mulalu, a hairstylist with over 29 years of experience and a passion for textured hair.

They recognize that every head of curls is unique and deserves personalized attention.  To ensure that, they use a consultation process to determine the best services for your specific black hair pattern and hair goals.

Another interesting approach is their use of the dry-cutting technique. This allows them to see how your curls naturally fall and shape them accordingly.

They even go the extra mile for first-timers by sending you home with a personalized “hair prescription”—a guide for maintaining your gorgeous curls at home.

We’re also pleasantly surprised that all their services are backed by a 7-day guarantee for adjustments.

We did hear reports of uneven haircuts so you might want to thoroughly check their work before going out the door.

  • Over 29 years of experience
  • Consultation first
  • Dry-cutting technique
  • First-timers get a personalized “hair prescription”

Received phenomenal service

“I received phenomenal service from Elizabeth. She brought my heat damaged dead hair back to life. Amazing transformation. I love my curls now! She was very kind and gentle. She also explained which products were being used and how they were good. Seeing how confident she was on what she was doing made me more comfortable and trusted her even more with my hair. I do not regret it. I highly recommend paying her a visit and I will definitely be coming back.”

Rare to find West African braiders in Toronto

“It is rare to find West African braiders in Toronto and braiders who genuinely care about providing a service of quality with full braids of the same sizes. I finally feel seen and respected 🙏🏾! I am so grateful and found my new favourite salon, I highly recommend!”

Amy Sylla, Google Review

Had the best experience getting my hair done!

“I had the best experience getting my hair done! Friendly and loving atmosphere, gentle and full of expertise. I walked in wanting to get a crochet weave with hair that easily tangles and Blandine came up with the brilliant idea to use the hair to do mini twists instead, a style that would last much longer. I trusted the team and was not disappointed! The style is just beautiful and I felt completely comfortable and at home while getting my hair done. I’ve been looking for a salon I can frequent and I’ve definitely found it! This is a huge win. If you’re thinking of getting your hair done at this salon, run there, don’t walk!”
